Tomato Plants: Secrets of Success

Buying Hints: Buy young plants. Look for pot-grown tomatoes with healthy green leaves and no flower bunches. Tomato plants should be about 8 in. tall, and their roots should be white. Avoid tomato plants that have been stuck in their pots too long. Do not buy those with yellow, thin, sraggly stems. Sun and Soil: Plentiful sunshine. Tomato plants thrive when given an abundance of sun. Keep them in a warm and sheltered position, but protect them from blazing eat or gusting winds. Humus-rich soil. Enrich your tomatoes' soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting and fertilize the plants regularly.****SPECIAL ADVICE*****For easier watering, bury a bottomless coffee can next to the tomato and pour the water into the can. This will allow water to go straight down to the roots. Ripen green tomatoes at the end of the season by placing them indoors next to ripe apples and bananas. They contain ripening agents that will redden the tomatoes.

Buying Hints: Buy Small seedlings in a tray. Choose compact seedlings with deep green leaves. If at least one seedling is in bloom, you can veriffy the color. Avoid leggy plants with yellowing leaves and those that are fully in flower, as they may be pot bound. Sun & Soil: Sun or shade. Impatiens are one of the few annual bedding plants that are able o tolerate even full shade under a tree. Well- drained soil. To keep your plants healthy, add some compost or all purpose fertilizer to soil. *****SPECIAL ADVICE***** For fuller growth, cut off the top third of your seedlings with a pair of scissors immediately after you plant them. Deadheading is not neccessary, as Impatiens are "self-cleaners"- old blooms are continuously replaced by new ones until first frost.
